The end of World War I

In 2018, we commemorated the centenary of the end of WWI, when the long-awaited Armistice of Compiégne was signed on 11th November 1918, ending the First World War on 'the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month'. One of the deadliest conflicts in history finally ended with victory for Great Britain and the Allied Powers, and the complete military defeat of the German Empire. Worldwide it is estimated that more than 9 million soldiers and 7 million civilians died during the First World War. After WWI, the red poppy was adopted as an internationally recognised symbol of remembrance. Every year paper Remembrance Day poppies are sold and worn by millions of people, to remember the soldiers who died in battle, and to raise money for thosewho have been injured or affected by war. Each year we honour Remembrance Day with a two-minute silence, to remember those who lost their lives in conflict and to mark the end of WWI.
