Victoria ascended to the British throne on 20th June 1837,at the young age of 18, and became Empress of India in 1876. Her long reign lasted for 63 years, seven months and two days - a record only surpassed in 2015, by the reign of her great-great-granddaughter Queen Elizabeth II.

Her era, known as the 'Victorian Era', was a time of immense progress for Great Britain, and the British Empire was at the height of its power. The Industrial Revolution was a time of great scientific, technological and industrial innovations, and Britain became the most powerful and richest country in the world. The Victorian era was period of significant social and technological change for Great Britain, but it was also a peaceful period and is considered to be the birth of Modern Times.
