The sinking of the RMS Titanic

The Titanic was one of three giant transatlantic passenger liners designed by the White Star Line.

Her construction began on 31stMarch 1909, in the Harland and Wolff Shipyard in Belfast, Ireland. The ship was said to be ‚unsinkable' due to 16 watertight compartments, that were designed to be completely sealed off if needed. Itwas believed that her construction made lifeboats only necessary for the rescue of survivors of other sinking ships. As such, the RMS Titanic carried just 20 lifeboats, that could only accommodate fewer than half of the people on board. The colossal ocean liner was the largest ship of its time: she weighed over 46,000 gross tons, had a length of 269 metres and a speed of 22 knots. The Titanic wasknown as the ‚Ship of Dreams' due to the sheer luxury she offered her wealthy passengers, which included a huge first-class dining saloon and a swimming pool.

On 10th April 1912, the RMS Titanic set sail on her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. She was scheduled to arrive on 17th April, but the giant passenger liner never reached its destination. Just before midnight on 14th April 1912, the unthinkable happened: the RMS Titanic struck an iceberg. Two hours and forty minutes later, the ship sank into the cold, dark waters of the North Atlantic Ocean. Of the 2,223 passengersand crew on the Titanic, only 706 survived, making it one of the biggest maritime disasters in history.
