'1861 Gold Double Eagle' Replica Coin

The Double Eagle $20 gold piece is the largest U.S. gold coin ever produced for use in daily circulation. The first Double Eagle was minted in 1849, the year after gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in California. The coin was authorized by Congress as a way to use the large supplies of gold flowing into commerce from California. Each Double Eagle coin contained nearly one full ounce of gold.The coin's orginial design incorporates a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty on the obverse and a heraldic eagle clutching a double scroll on the reverse. The Gold Liberty Head Double Eagle was minted from 1850 until 1907 and has been reproduced here in amazing detail.

Today, the Gold Double Eagle is one of the most sought-after coins in the world with originals being sold for over $1 million.
