'Trooping the Colour' Commemorative Strike

Queen Elizabeth II is now the longest reigning monarch in British history - and many collectors are now looking for special commemoratives to document her long and successful reign.

Every year on a Saturday in June, the traditional military parade 'Trooping the Colour' takes place in honour of the reigning British Sovereign's birthday. The origin of this military ceremony dates backover 300 years. The regimental flags are historically known as 'Colours' because they displayed the colours of the uniform and insignia worn by the soldiers. The daily parade of the regimental colourswas held to ensure that every soldier could recognise his own regiment during battle.

Today the 'Trooping of the Colours' is a special ceremony held in honour - and in the presence - of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and takes place on Horse Guards Parade, Whitehall. The Queen is greeted by the Royal salute and she carries out her inspection of the troops. The Foot Guards and the Household Cavalry march past The Queen, and the King's Troop, Royal Horse Artillery rank past with their guns.

The Queen's official birthday, celebrated on the 1st or 2nd Saturday in June, is marked by this parade, a royal tradition which has been upheld almost every year since 1748. On the occasion of her official 60th birthday in 1986, Her Majesty rode Burmese, the horse which had been a gift in 1969 from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, during the parade.
