'Tutankhamun' Commemorative Strike

90 years ago, on 16 February 1923, archaeologist Howard Carter finally opened the doors to the sealed burial chamber of King Tutankhamun. Carter had discovered the tomb virtually intact the previous November - it was a discovery that became one of the most celebrated and spectacular in history - yet no one could imagine what treasures lay hidden deep within. Only after months of excavation, when the final chamber was opened, did the incredible wealth of the boy king come to light and Carter became the first person in 3,200 years to see the sarcophagus of King Tut. Comprising three nested golden coffins, the innermost of solid gold included one of the most spectacular and beautiful ancient artefacts in the world - the famous death mask.

Minted to celebrate the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb this commemorative strike features a stunning portrayal of King Tut's golden burial mask plated in finest gold.
