'The Guinea 1663' Commemorative Strike

The most famous English gold coin is the gold guinea. Guineas were first minted in 1663 during the reign of King Charles II, following the restoration of the monarchy and on 6th February 1663 replaced the gold "Unite" that had been used up to then.

The coin's name comes from the gold brought from the African country of Guinea. It was the first-ever machine-struck gold coin to be produced in Britain, and over the 150 years that it was minted it became one of the most widely traded British gold coins. Whilst the last guinea was minted in 1817, the legacy of the coin survived well into the 20th century used as payment terms for lawyers, in horse racing and in the sale of livestock.
