The 4472 Flying Scotsman (originally No. 1472) was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley and built in 1923 in Doncaster for the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER). By 1924, it had been given the name the'Flying Scotsman' after the London to Edinburgh rail service which started daily at 10am. In 1928, it gained a new type of tender with a corridor, which meant a new crew could take over without stopping the train. This allowed the first ever non-stop London - Edinburgh service on 1st May. In 1934, it was clocked at 100mph - officially the first locomotive to have reached that speed. Intro: Itwas 50 years ago in 1963 that, after almost forty years in service for the GNR, LNER and British Railways, the "Flying Scotsman" retired. In celebration of the historic anniversary in 2013 this unique Commemorative Strike pays tribute to the world's most famous steam locomotive and is a must for any collection.
