'St. Edward´s Crown' Commemorative Strike

It was over 350 years ago in 1661 that the monarchy was restored and Charles II was crowned King at Westminster Abbey. However during Cromwell's 'abolition' of the monarchy much of the royal regalia, which dated back to Edward the Confessor, was destroyed - taken to the Tower of London to be melted down at the Mint and turned into coins for his New Model Army. Thus on the occasion of his coronation Charles II was faced with an empty Jewellery Chamber, and a new set of regalia was commissioned, which today would be a value of over 400 Million Pounds.

One of the most enduring and iconic pieces of the regalia is St. Edward's Crown - crafted in gold, it weighs an incredible 2.23 kg and is adorned with 444 gemstones and pearls. The St. Edwards crown is only ever used in the coronation ceremony and was last used at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
