The famous predecessor of the popular Krugerrand was minted between 1961 and 1983, in the historic fineness of 22-carat gold. From 1961, the Rand replaced the South African Pound as the official legalcurrency. During the entire time the gold coin was minted, the motif remained unchanged: the portrait on the obverse commemorates the Dutch colonial administrator Jan van Riebeeck, who founded Cape Town in 1652. The springbok, featured on the reverse, is the traditional national animal of South Africa.
