'Queen Elizabeth II' Gold Half Sovereign

The Gold Sovereign is one of the oldest coins that is still being issued today. The coin is steeped in a rich and fascinating history - Henry VII commissioned the Royal Mint to produce the first ever Gold Sovereign in 1489, over 500 years ago. The Sovereign derived its name from its distinctive obverse which carries the portrait of the ruling monarch. The reverse design features Benedetto Pistrucci's famous 'St George and the Dragon' motif, which was first struck in 1817.

The Queen Elizabeth II Gold Half Sovereign minted from March 2015-2021, features the fifthdefinitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, created by Royal Mint engraver Jody Clark. The portrait depicts the Queen wearing the Diamond Jubilee drop earrings, with her chin slightly lifted, which is said to represent the Queen looking positively towards the future.
