The Jumbo '1933 Double Eagle' Replica

Having achieved $7.59 million at auction in 2002, the 1933 Gold Double Eagle holds the title of being the most valuable gold coin in the world. Designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens it was minted in 1933 during the great depression. Although 445,000 were produced, the coins were never released into circulation as Roosevelt introduced a ban on gold ownership. Consequently all but a handful were ordered to be melted down apart from two gold coins for official documentation. It is speculated, however, that more avoided destruction - the exact number remains unknown. In 2005 a cache of 10 were discovered and seized by the United States Mint, they are currently being held at Fort Knox.
