The history of human flight began in the 1780s, over 240 years ago, when people started to conquer the skies in hot air balloons and unpowered gliders. In 1884, the British engineer Edward Butler changed the history of aviation with the first petrol internal combustion engine - now, powered, controlled flight was possible. The first successful airplane, built by the Wright brothers and known as the 'Wright Flyer', took off in the skies of North Carolina.
Later, British fighter pilots like Edward Mannock rose to fame courageously flying their aircraft during WWI. Heroes of the skies, like the famous Avro Lancaster, excelled in the Second World War and contributed hugely to the victory of Britain and the Allies. By the 1950s, jet airliners were carrying passengers comfortably between continents and across oceans in a matter of hours, and since the 1970s, the highly successful Airbus models have been used by British Airways and other airlines to cover short to medium-distance flights, with the Airbus A380, the world's largest passenger airliner, celebrating its 15th anniversary in April 2020.
Now the history of aviation has been celebrated with an exclusive edition of 24 precious strikes. Layered with 24-carat gold and finished with sought-after colour detailing, this stunning set is strictly limited in mintage and comes with a beautiful display folder.
