'Queen Elizabeth II' Gold Sovereigns 5-Coin Set

Queen Elizabeth II was the much-loved and respected Queen of the United Kingdom for 70 years, longer than any other monarch in British history. This unique set contains the five definitive Sovereign portraits of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II from her accession to the throne on 6th February 1952 to 8th September 2022, when she sadly passed away.

Five highly coveted British Gold Sovereigns, featuring the five different effigies of Queen Elizabeth II during her long and successful reign. The set contains the five definitive UK coin royal portraits by artists Mary Gillick, Arnold Machin, Raphael Maklouf, Ian Rank-Broadley and Jody Clark. The reverse design on these gold coins features Benedetto Pistrucci's famous 'St George & the Dragon' motif, which was first struck in 1817. This special set comes presented in a luxury display case.

The Mary Gillick Portrait - Minted from 1957-1968:
Even though Elizabeth II reigned from 1952, her first Sovereign was notminted until 1957. The obverse portrait, designed by sculptor Mary Gillick, depicts a young and beautiful Queen Elizabeth II wearing a wreath. Mary Gillick's uncrowned portrait featured on all Sovereigns between 1957-1968, and the design continues to grace the Maundy Money distributed each year by the Queen. As the first ever Gold Sovereign of Queen Elizabeth II, it is especially coveted all overthe world.

The Arnold Machin Portrait - Minted from 1974-1984:
The second edition of the Queen Elizabeth II Gold Sovereign was designed by sculptor Arnold Machin. Minted from 1974-1984, his magnificent portrait depicted a young Queen Elizabeth II wearing the 'Girls of Great Britain and Ireland' tiara, which had been given to the Queen as a wedding present in 1947 by her grandmother, Queen Mary. A version of Machin's portrait has appeared on British postage stamps since 1967. His popular design is still highly sought-after.

The Raphael Maklouf Portrait - Minted from 1985-1997:
The third definitive royal portrait of Queen Elizabeth II was designed by sculptor Raphael Maklouf and was minted from 1985-1997. Maklouf's couped portrait (cut off above the shoulders) shows the Queen wearing the King George IV State Diadem, the Diamond Diadem Her Majesty wore to the annual State Opening of Parliament. This was the first portrait to show Queen Elizabeth II wearing earrings and a necklace. Unlike earlier coins, the third edition Gold Sovereign was only issued in the highest minting quality 'proof' and is therefore more difficult for collectors to obtain today.

The Ian Rank-Broadley portrait - Minted from 1998-2014:
From 1998-2014, the fourth edition of the Queen Elizabeth II Sovereign featured a beautiful portrait by sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley. Unlike the earlier designs, which highlighted the Queen's youthfulness during the early years of her reign, Ian Rank-Broadley's couped design depicted a mature portrait of Her Majesty. The forth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the Queen Mary button stud pearl earrings and the 'Girls of Great Britain and Ireland' tiara, was made larger to fill more of the coin's surface.

The Jody Clark Portrait - Minted from 2015-2022:
The most recent portrait, created by Royal Mint engraver Jody Clark, was issued in time for Her Majesty's 90th Birthday. It is the fifth definitive Sovereign portrait of Queen Elizabeth II to be released during her record-breaking reign. Jody Clark's portrait depicts the Queen wearing the Diamond Jubilee drop earrings, with her chin slightly lifted, which is said to represent the Queen looking positively towards the future.
