Flavius Valerius Constantinus, also known as Constantine the Great or Constantine I, was Roman emperor from 306 to 337. Hewas responsible for initiating the Constantinian Shift, in which Christianity was first tolerated in the Roman Empire, but went on to increase in importance. Constantine also moved his seat of residence from Rome to Byzantium, or Istanbul as it is known today. The new capital was initially given the name New Rome but this was soon changed to Constantinople.
