'Dambuster's Raid' Commemorative Strike

It was on the night of May 16th, 1943 that nineteen specially adapted Lancaster bombers took off from RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire and flew into history. Their mission codenamed operation Chastise, would become the most famous of all World War II bombing raids, it was so ambitious and so risky that even to this day it is hard to believe it is not a work of fiction. Their mission - todestroy three dams deep within the German heartland. Their weapon - each was carrying a huge 9,000 lb cylindrical rotating bomb - the famous 'Barnes Wallis-bouncing bomb'.

Capturing the drama of this daring feat of ingenuity, bravery and skill the Dambusters Commemorative Coin pays tribute to Barnes Wallis, Guy Gibson and the brave men of 617 Squadron. Their commitment, perseverance and sheer dogged determination in the face of dangerous and improbable odds have made the Dambusters a legend the annals of our military history.
