Item desciption
On Christmas Eve 1914 soldiers in the muddy, cold and wet trenches along the Western Front, longed to be home, to be with their families. As the German soldiers started to sing Christmas carols, a miracle happened! In several places soldiers left their sheltered positions and calling out ‚Merry Christmas‘ they met in ‚no man‘s land‘ between the trenches. After months of hard battle an unofficial ceasefire took place, as they shook hands, exchanged small presents and cigarettes and showed each other photographs of their wives and children. They even agreed to meet up on the following Christmas Day. And indeed - the Christmas miracle went on: the men met up again in ‚no man‘s land‘ and spontaneous football games were arranged. This Christmas Truce of 1914 made history as one the most symbolic moments of human spirit during World War I. It was to be the last time, as the military leaders on both sides prohibited any further contact with the enemy.
