The Battle of El Alamein 1942 Commemorative Strike

Fought in the deserts of North Africa, the Battle of El Alamein was one of the decisive victories of WWII. An initial battle in July had stalled the Axis advance on Cairo, then on October 23rd1942 the Allied forces met the Afrika Korps under General Rommel (the Desert Fox) once again. This time the 8th Army (The Desert Rats) were under the command of General Montgomery. "Stand and fight or lose our lives in the attempt" were Monty's orders to his troops, words that inspired a magnificent victory and ultimately led to the retreat of the Afrika Korps on 4th November 1942.

The 'Battle of El Alamein' commemorative strike was minted to mark the 70th anniversary of this poignant and historic occasion in 2011. This masterfully engraved commemorative is exclusiveto Windsor Mint and has been minted to the highest quality 'proof condition and features 24 carat gold accenting on the reverse.
