Beginning at 06:25 hours on 6th June 1944, the Allied forces launched a spectacular coordinated invasion from land, sea, and air aimed at liberating Europe from the Nazis. Codenamed Operation Overlord the Normandy landings saw more than 150,000 Allied troops surging onto a 40-mile stretch of Nazi- occupied beaches in northwest France. That momentous day, now known as D- Day, hassubsequently become one of the most crucial of WWII. Overlord proved a psychological and physical blow to German military fortunes from which they would never recover.
