'Battle of Normandy' Commemorative Strike

The invasion of Normandy, 70 years ago on D-Day, June 6, 1944, was one of the most important moments of the twentieth century.

More than 150,000 Allied troops surged into Nazi-occupied France on that momentous day, overcoming the profound challenges of assaulting a coastline the enemy had fortifi ed for nearly four years.

Six divisions were to land on the fi rst day; three U.S., two British and one Canadian. Two more British and one U.S. division were to follow up after the assault division had cleared the way through the beach defences. Of fi ve D-Day seaborne invasion sites, the one with the toughest terrain and most formidable German defences was Omaha Beach, which was assaulted shortly after daybreak on June 6 by the 1st and 29th InfantryDivisions of the U.S. Army's V Corps.
