In 1933, with America caught in the grip of the Great Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt made private ownership of gold hoards illegal. The government confiscated all the newly minted 1933Gold Double Eagles and melted them down into gold bullion bars. Two coins were saved and presented to the U.S. National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian Institute. However, it is speculatedthat a handful of coins were secreted away by a Mint employee.
RUTHENIUM - the rise of the dark precious metal:
A world-first commemoration of the legendary 1933 Double Eagle, plated in rare black ruthenium and 24-carat gold Whilst most coin collectors and investors have already set their eyes firmly on gold, prices for a rarely seen precious metal have been rocketing over the last months: rare black ruthenium, a 'sister' of rhodium and platinum, has quintupled just in the last year.
Inspired by this rise in value, a new restrike of the legendary U.S. Double Eagle has been issued, and due to our close cooperation with American Mint we have managed to get hold of a small number of these strikes for our British Double Eagle collectors.
