To honour the lives and legacies of the men who have served the United States as President, Congress passed the Presidential 1 Dollar Coin Act of 2005. This act commissioned the US mint to create a series of coins featuring the Presidents in the order that they served. Starting in 2007 these coins were only minted for one year and were released into circulation beginning with Washington, Adams, Jefferson and Madison.
