John F. Kennedy was a war hero, a statesman, a family man and the 35th president of the United States. A third generation Irish American, President Kennedy stood firm against the Russians in the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962. He was the youngest man ever to be elected president - and, alas, the youngest to die with his assassination on November 22nd 1963 - age just 46.
The Kennedy assassination cast a dark shadow of mourning, not just over a nation, but also over the entire world. To pay homage to a great President, the United States Mint issued the first Kennedy half-dollar in November 1964.
